Roger Martin

Roger Martin currently is an independent consultant on a wide range of technology standards issues.

Previously he was the Director of Technology Standards Office at AOL. Prior to joining AOL in September 2002, he was the manager of Corporate Standards Strategy for Sun Microsystems for the previous 6 years.

Roger began his career with the Federal government in 1971 with the Naval Ship Research and Development Center. He moved to the Office of Management and Budget in the Executive Office of the President in 1976 before joining the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) in 1982 where he held a number of positions including Chief of the Systems and Software Technology Division.

Roger has served on numerous industry consortia Boards and management committees including: Liberty Alliance, Kantara Initiative, The Open Group (previously X/Open), and the Object Management Group.

Roger has been active in voluntary SDO IT standardization at both the national and international levels as well as numerous industry standards consortia for over 30 years. He has chaired several key POSIX and Software Engineering technical committees in the IEEE and ISO/IEC JTC1. He has held technical leadership positions on numerous standards groups and consortia. His technical background includes software engineering, reliable systems, and open system environments and technologies

Roger has received many public awards for his work including the Department of Commerce Silver and Bronze Medals, the IEEE Standards Medallion, and the IEEE Hans Karlsson award for “team leadership and achievement though collaboration in the field of computing standards.”

Roger holds a B.S. and M.S. in computer science from Iowa State University.
