IEEE 1588 Technical Background
The Alliance Certification Program has been formed to assess the conformity of IEEE 1588TM implementations over a wide range of applications such as telecommunications, Smart Grid, manufacturing and digital audio and video broadcasting.
The initial focus of the Alliance is telecommunications applications such as mobile backhaul. A second track will focus on certifying the conformance of power applications, and the alliance is seeking participation and input in that activity from across the power industry.
Telecom Profile
The certification program is rolling out in three phases: development, review and approval of the Certification Test Suite for telecom followed by the certification program launch planned for Q1 2011.
The Certification Test Suite is based on requirements specified in the IEEE 1588TM standard together with ITU-T recommendations covering frequency distribution as outlined below:

The Alliance will extend the conformity assessment program to the delivery of time and phase when the relevant profiles become available in the ITU-T recommendations.
The Alliance plans the full launch of the certification program in Q1 2011 with Iometrix serving as the authorized test laboratory. It will first be open to vendors worldwide who are implementing equipment and chipset to the 1588v2 standards for telecommunications applications.
